Egyptian Youth Support 17 Great Goals For A Better World

June 8, 2016 Volunteering

No Poverty

"In this new century, millions of people in the world's poorest countries remain imprisoned, enslaved, and in chains. They are trapped in the prison of poverty. It is time to set them free." - Nelson Mandela

End poverty in all its forms everywhere, to eradicate extreme poverty for all people, reduce at least half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions, and have equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to basic services.

Zero Hunger

"The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little." - Franklin D. Roosevelt

End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. Ensuring access to all people in particular the poor ones, double the agriculture productivity and incomes, and allowing equal access to land, technology and markets.

Quality Education

"In some parts of the world, students are going to school every day. It's their normal life. But in other parts of the world, we are starving for education... it's like a precious gift. It's like a diamond…" - Malala Yousafzai

Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. Ensuring that all girls and boys complete free and quality education, and ensure that all youth and adults, both men and women, achieve literacy and numeracy

Good Health and Well-being

"The essence of global health equity is the idea that something so precious as health might be viewed as a right." – Dr. Paul Farmer

Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. Including a bold commitment to end diseases like AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. It also aims to achieve universal health coverage, provide access to safe and effective medicines and vaccines for all, and supporting research and development for vaccines.

Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions

"Every time we turn our heads the other way when we see the law flouted, when we tolerate what we know to be wrong, when we close our eyes and ears to the corrupt because we are too busy or too frightened, when we fail to speak up and speak out, we strike a blow against freedom and decency and justice." - Robert F. Kennedy

Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective and accountable institutions at all levels. Reduce all forms of violence, work with governments and communities to find lasting solutions to conflict and insecurity, and strengthening the rule of law and promoting human rights.

Gender Equality

"Women’s status in society has become the standard by which humanity’s progress toward civility and peace can be measured"- Mahnaz Afkhami

Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. End all forms of discrimination and violence against all women and girls. Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making and having equal rights.

What is AIESEC doing about this?

Young people will be the people who carry these goals over the next 15 years, and this is why we need to engage them on these issues today. At the same time, we need to help decision makers understand what the global youth opinion is, and how we can work together to address these issues. Young people must understand the depth of these goals and how they will impact our lives and our common future.

In December 2015, AIESEC declared to adopt and contribute to achieving the Global Goals for Sustainable Development by mobilizing and developing young leaders who create awareness, foster engagement and take action to implement these goals.

It’s not only up to governments to take action, it’s up to all of us - and that includes you. It starts with little things that can make a big impact, and the more people know about the Global Goals for sustainable development, the more successful they will be. So let everybody know about the Global Goals, what they are and why they matter.
